Description

In Two of a kind, a man and woman face one another in a social encounter shaped by display and mutual appraisal. Francisco Goya’s Two of a Kind suggests a correspondence between the pair that goes beyond their outward differences. The surrounding figures add the pressure of an audience, making the meeting feel at once intimate and publicly performed.

Plate 5 of Los Caprichos, published in 1799, uses etching and aquatint to give this exchange a convincing worldly setting. The caption’s apparent equivalence unsettles easy judgments about which participant is deceiving the other. Goya’s interest lies in the shared performance of attraction and advantage. The image invites attention to the gap between a polished appearance and a private motive, allowing the comedy to emerge from a relationship in which both sides may understand the game.
