Description

In Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple, bodies tumble across the foreground as Christ raises a whip near the center. Tall arches and a column give the confrontation an expansive interior setting. The episode of driving out the money changers becomes an event of opposing movement, allowing a familiar sacred narrative to acquire immediate force through people brought suddenly into conflict.

Made in 1635, the etching gives the subject a concentrated material form on paper. Rembrandt makes the conflict an event of bodies and relationships rather than a detached statement of moral principle. Its interest lies in the way a sacred narrative can be approached through practical movement within a shared space. The image holds one confrontation before the viewer, allowing the figures’ immediate encounter to carry a significance extending beyond the moment represented.
