Description
Jacob Wrestling with the Angel places the struggling figures in the central-left area of a dark arched composition within a wooded setting. Eugène Delacroix gives Jacob’s encounter with the angel a particular visual presence, joining the named biblical pair through physical struggle. The study concentrates attention on that relationship, allowing the bodies’ meeting to remain central within the surrounding darkness rather than an isolated likeness of either figure.
The 1850 study uses oil over pen and ink on tracing paper, mounted on canvas and backed with linen. Its layered materials give the scene a working identity distinct from a fully finished monumental painting. The encounter’s interest lies in that preparation, where the relationship between the figures can be considered through drawn and painted means and where a dramatic subject acquires a particular visual presence.
