Description
A man’s head appears in profile beneath a broad beret in Rembrandt’s Fourth Oriental Head. Long curling hair and a beard lend texture to the face’s outline, while a richly dark shoulder anchors the lower portion. The contrast between the detailed head and the heavier garment gives the small portrait a pronounced sense of presence.
Made about 1635, this etching is the second of three states. The historical title names a portrait type rather than establishing a particular sitter or nationality. Rembrandt’s attention falls on the meeting of facial profile, headwear and varied textures, giving the small head study its concentrated character. The print rewards close looking at the transition from fine curls and facial marks to the larger dark mass below, where economy and detail work together.
