Description

Clement de Jonghe sits beneath a brimmed hat, a broad cloak giving his upper body a substantial outline. One hand rests near his torso, lending a small human gesture to the larger folds of the garment. Rembrandt presents the printseller through a composed seated presence, allowing face, hat and cloak to establish a clear likeness without a crowded setting.

Made in 1651, it combines etching, drypoint and burin and belongs to the fifth of ten states recorded for the plate. That sequence preserves the portrait as a developed printed design rather than a single unchanging drawing. Rembrandt’s varied techniques allow different kinds of mark to contribute to one likeness. The image’s interest lies in the relationship between a named person and the printmaking process that made his appearance available beyond the immediate encounter with the artist.
