Description

In Eros Vanquished, two men sit closely side by side in profile, facing toward the right amid lightly indicated chairs and table objects. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec gives Eros Vanquished an intimate human grouping through a faintly drawn arrangement. The close spacing makes their shared presence the focus, while the sparse surrounding marks provide a setting without turning the scene into an elaborate account of events.

The 1894 lithograph is made on wove paper. Its lightly marked furnishings leave the two profiles as the clearest points of attention, while their close spacing gives the grouping an intimate rhythm. Toulouse-Lautrec allows the seated men to establish the scene without a heavily worked interior, making small differences of head and position matter within the quiet, economical drawing.
