Description
This version of Olympia translates Édouard Manet’s reclining nude into a sharply abbreviated arrangement of shapes. The reclining figure rests on broad sweeps of pale cloth, with dark hatching gathering above and around her. The limited palette of black and ochre makes the scene’s contrasts feel immediate and deliberately graphic.
Dated 1923, the work is a color woodcut after Manet, not a print made by Manet himself. Its maker reinterprets the composition through the distinctive simplifications of the cut block, allowing exposed paper and concentrated ink to carry the figure and setting. The contrast between the pale figure and surrounding dark marks gives the familiar subject a compact rhythm of line and mass.
