Description
Albrecht Dürer’s Landscape with a Large Cannon joins a commanding foreground object to a richly described panorama. The cannon and nearby figures occupy the front of the scene, while fields, buildings, and distant hills extend beyond them. Closely spaced lines give the land its texture and lead the eye through the many layers of the view.
Made in 1518, the etching shows Dürer’s ability to bring landscape and human activity into a single detailed composition. The heavy cannon contrasts with the open countryside, introducing a sense of military presence into the expansive setting. Its varied marks and careful shifts of scale make the image rewarding to explore.
