Description

In Composition VII, Wassily Kandinsky brings sweeping curves, sharp black lines and bursts of color into a dense, restless field. Pink, yellow, blue and green forms overlap and pull the eye in different directions, while loops and diagonals create a sense of movement across the canvas. The painting invites an experience of rhythm and tension rather than the reading of a recognizable scene.

Painted in 1913, this large oil on canvas belongs to Kandinsky’s early exploration of abstraction. More than thirty preparatory works preceded it, including drawings, watercolors and painted studies. These experiments helped him develop the relationships of color, line and form that give the finished composition its complexity.

Now in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, Composition VII is distinct from the preliminary watercolor sometimes associated with it. Its layered forms suggest a visual counterpart to music: contrasting passages gather, collide and open into quieter spaces, allowing the eye to discover new connections with each viewing.
