Description

In A gift for the master, a grotesque gathering presents an offering to a figure treated as a master, turning deference into a disturbing ceremony. Francisco Goya’s A Gift for the Master places the language of gratitude within the fantastic world of Los Caprichos. The participants’ shared attention makes the exchange feel organized, even as its character remains deeply unsettling.

Published in 1799 as plate 47, the etching and burnished aquatint explore the ways service and allegiance can become irrational. Goya gives the impossible company recognizable social relationships: someone receives, others supply, and the act establishes a hierarchy. The title’s polite phrasing makes the scene’s strangeness more pronounced. Its appeal lies in that uneasy familiarity, allowing the habits of tribute and approval to survive inside a world whose values have become grotesquely distorted.
