Description
In Get Them Well, and On to the Next, Francisco Goya presents wounded soldiers receiving rough assistance in a barren landscape. Two men hold an injured figure upright while another casualty falters farther back. Dark rock and dry trees frame the activity, and bodies in the distance complicate any sense of recovery. The helpers’ effort does not dispel the scene’s underlying desolation.
Plate 20 of The Disasters of War makes its apparently merciful action uneasy through the blunt wording of its title. Treatment becomes part of a repeating cycle, preparing men for further conflict rather than restoring a peaceful life. Goya focuses on the physical difficulty of supporting another person, using closely worked lines and strong tonal contrast. The image keeps compassion and military necessity in an uncomfortable, unresolved relationship.
