Description

Even Thus He Cannot Make Her Out by Francisco de Goya stages an awkward encounter between a woman and a man peering through an eyeglass. His exaggerated attention and her poised stance make looking itself the subject of the scene.

Fine lines articulate the clothing and faces against a quiet background. The distance between the two figures and the pointed caption beneath them give the meeting a dry, comic uncertainty.
