Francisco Goya’s They Do Not Arrive in Time brings women together around a collapsing companion. One supports the failing body under the arms while others approach or stand with distressed expressions. Pale garments distinguish the principal figures against a dark, broken-looking background. Their gestures create a chain of concern, but the supported woman’s weight makes the urgency of the moment unmistakable.

Plate 52 of The Disasters of War examines assistance that comes too late. Goya’s title gives the scene a tragic finality without erasing the care embodied in the women’s actions. The group recalls the familiar form of a lamentation while remaining an encounter shaped by wartime hunger. The print’s emotional force lies in that combination: human solidarity is clearly present, yet it cannot always overcome the conditions that have brought someone to the point of death.
