Description
In This Is Bad, Francisco Goya depicts a soldier driving a sword toward a monk whose pale habit catches the light. The monk opens his arms while other armed figures stand close, and another body lies nearby. The dark enclosure compresses the confrontation into a few stark gestures. Light on the victim’s clothing makes the attack painfully clear.
Plate 46 of The Disasters of War condemns violence without requiring the victim to belong to an idealized group. Goya, elsewhere a critic of clerical privilege, does not let that criticism excuse cruelty against an individual. The title’s plain statement gives the scene a direct moral force. Precisely drawn action and heavy shadow expose an abuse of armed power, keeping human vulnerability more important than the institution represented by the monk’s clothing.
