Description

In Charlatan’s Show, Francisco Goya places a robed, bird-headed figure before a gathering of grotesque spectators. Its spread arms create a theatrical gesture, while the surrounding faces blur the boundary between people, masks and animals. The crowd’s close attention gives this strange performer an appearance of authority. The setting remains spare enough for the figure’s posture and the watchers’ expressions to dominate.

Plate 75 of The Disasters of War belongs to the series’ final allegorical scenes, where social and political criticism takes fantastic forms. Goya leaves the precise identity of the central figure uncertain, avoiding the simplicity of a single portrait or incident. What becomes clear is the relation between performance and credulous followers. The title turns this gathering into a public display of empty claims, exposing authority as something sustained by an accommodating audience.
