Description

Francisco Goya’s Truth Has Died shows a luminous woman lying before a gathering preparing her burial. Religious figures and tools surround the body, while a grieving figure associated with justice stands apart. The woman’s pale form gives the scene its principal light, even as those around her seem intent on covering it. This contradiction makes the funeral feel like an assault on something not entirely extinguished.

Plate 79 of The Disasters of War moves beyond individual death into allegory. Truth takes human form, allowing Goya to expose its suppression as a visible act performed by a community. The title sounds final, but the light continuing to emanate from the figure complicates that certainty. The print leaves grief and resistance together in one image, preparing the unresolved question of renewal raised by the following plate, Will She Rise Again?
