Description

Basle places waterfront buildings and a tall spire at the right of a river view designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with engraving by Charles Turner. A multi-arched bridge extends at the left and middle, with boats on the foreground water beneath bright clouds. Architecture and river become neighboring presences, making the city’s identity tangible through its relationship to a wider open setting.

Published on June 11, 1807, the etching and mezzotint is part of Liber Studiorum. Its combination of linear and tonal work gives the scene a printed character distinct from a watercolor or oil painting. J. M. W. Turner’s design and Charles Turner’s engraving remain separate contributions within the image. The view offers a closer encounter with a named place, making the city’s presence something to consider through its relationship to space rather than a label alone.
