Description

Los Caprichos, plate 67, Wait Till You’ve Been Anointed, shows a goat-like creature standing above crouching grotesque figures. Their strange gathering suggests an uncanny ceremony, making the scene feel poised between human behavior and nightmare. The contrast between the upright creature and the bodies below gives the unsettling encounter a clear hierarchy without resolving its absurdity.

Created for the Caprichos published in 1799, the design belongs to Goya’s incisive exploration of folly and superstition. Etching and aquatint allow sharp forms to emerge from broad tonal darkness, giving the fantastic encounter an immediate visual force. The image’s fascination lies in this uncertainty, where absurdity and menace share the same space and an imagined ritual begins to resemble recognizable human habits.

The image reproduced here is plate 67 from Los Caprichos; the museum’s collection title refers to the complete set of plates 1–80.
