Description
A long, multi-arched bridge crosses a broad river, while tall trees screen the setting sun and two women listen to a pipe player in the foreground. J. M. W. Turner gives the landscape an intimate musical gathering before its larger architectural vista. The nearby people establish a quiet scale of attention, while the bridge carries the eye outward across the river’s open space.
Issued in 1808 for Liber Studiorum, the print combines etching, aquatint and mezzotint. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched the composition, with Charles Turner adding tonal work and publishing the result. The different techniques bring human figures, trees and architecture into a shared atmosphere, allowing pastoral leisure and the broad river crossing to remain distinct yet connected parts of the same landscape.
