Description

Boys gather around a table in a wooded clearing in Juvenile Tricks, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by William Say. Some stand while others sit, their small gathering enclosed by trees rising at the left. The woodland gives their activity a sheltered stage, making youthful company the living center of a landscape rather than a decorative addition.

Published on January 1, 1811, the etching and mezzotint belongs to Liber Studiorum. Turner’s series gives different kinds of subjects a place within a common printed project, allowing modest activity to carry significance alongside more expansive views. The work’s interest lies in the relationship between people and their immediate surroundings. A small occasion of play can give a landscape its human character, making the scene engaging through the particular life taking place within it.
