Description

A pastoral valley opens toward broad estuarine waters in J. M. W. Turner’s Junction of the Severn and Wye. Trees frame the view at the right, while small figures and livestock occupy the nearer ground. Their modest presence establishes a human scale for the expansive waterways, connecting the immediate life of the valley with the distances unfolding beyond it.

Published in June 1811, the print combines etching, aquatint and mezzotint and belongs to Liber Studiorum. Turner is recorded as artist and publisher, bringing the view into the series’ wider exploration of landscape. The medium joins line and tone, giving the subject a material presence distinct from a painted panorama. Its interest lies in the connection between a named place and an ordinary natural process, where rivers coming together make the landscape particular through their relationships.
