Description

A dark wooded glen encloses the small figures of Procris and Cephalus near the lower left. A leaning tree occupies the center and right, while a distant opening admits light beyond the close woodland. Turner gives the mythological pair a setting of considerable depth, allowing their human encounter to belong to a landscape that extends far around them.

Published on February 14, 1812, the print combines etching and mezzotint. J. M. W. Turner designed and etched the composition, with George Clint responsible for the engraving; this impression is the first of three states. The division of graphic work brings outlines and tonal passages together in one scene. The title offers a narrative identity, but the image also invites attention to how a mythological subject can belong to a full landscape rather than remain an isolated illustration of figures.
