Description
Winchelsea places a medieval gate tower above marshland near England’s southern coast, with soldiers occupying the foreground. J. M. W. Turner gives Winchelsea a meeting between older architecture and the military presence of his own time. The tower’s upright mass contrasts with the lower terrain, allowing the landscape to hold a sense of watchfulness without becoming only a portrait of the building.
Issued in 1812 for Liber Studiorum, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with J. C. Easling providing tonal engraving. The soldiers connect the setting with the period’s war against Napoleonic France. The print balances that historical circumstance with the wider coastal ground, letting the gate and small figures remain particular elements within an expansive view.
