Description
The River Wye loops beneath the ruined forms of Chepstow Castle as evening light settles across the landscape. Cows, swimmers and a charcoal burner’s smoke give the view quieter notes of local life. J. M. W. Turner makes the river’s curve a connection between these small activities and the elevated ruin, allowing the setting to hold both human use and a sense of distance.
Issued in 1812 for Liber Studiorum, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with William T. Annis developing the tone. The landscape draws its rhythm from irregular architecture, winding water and intervals of open ground. Those relationships keep attention moving across the scene, making an evening view engaging through the balance between a substantial landmark and the quieter presences around it.
