Description
Solway Moss shows cattle crossing a broad estuary at low tide, storm clouds moving above while smoke rises from low hills in the distance. J. M. W. Turner gives Solway Moss a landscape in which small moving animals meet an expansive sky and shore. The open crossing makes the herd’s scale clear, allowing the setting near the English-Scottish border to feel both inhabited and exposed.
Issued in 1816 for Liber Studiorum, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with Thomas Goff Lupton providing tonal engraving. The differing densities of cloud and ground make weather part of the scene’s structure. The cattle’s passage brings a modest pastoral activity into that broader atmosphere, connecting the landscape’s changing conditions with the practical movement taking place below them.
