Description
Norham Castle rises on a hill near the center of this river landscape. The water occupies the foreground and reflects the prospect above, while figures and animals appear along the banks. Turner gives the ruin a setting larger than its own structure, letting the river and the small living presences soften the separation between the historic building and its surrounding terrain.
Published on January 1, 1816, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Charles Turner. This is the first of three states in Liber Studiorum. The print allows the castle to be approached through its relationship with the surrounding landscape rather than as a freestanding architectural diagram. Its interest lies in joining the durable presence of a historic building with the wider space of a river setting.
