Description
Rustic buildings and the ferry crossing occupy a waterside setting in Water Cress Gatherers, designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Thomas Goff Lupton. People gather near the lower right beneath dark, billowing clouds. The weather gives an ordinary working landscape a heightened atmosphere, while the small figures keep its drama grounded in daily activity.
Published on January 1, 1819, the etching and mezzotint is part of Liber Studiorum. Turner’s landscape project gives modest subjects room alongside grander or more historical scenes. Its interest lies in the relationship between people and the place in which they work, where a practical task can make an ordinary setting feel distinctly inhabited. The printed image preserves that connection through a worked surface of line and tone, allowing daily activity and land to remain engaging together.
