Description
The Fifth Plague of Egypt fills a biblical landscape with an overwhelming storm of hail and fire. The title names The Fifth Plague of Egypt, but the Metropolitan Museum identifies the represented episode with the seventh plague in Exodus. Turner makes the forces above the land an active part of the narrative, giving the setting a scale that exceeds the human presences below.
Published on June 10, 1808, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved and published by Charles Turner. This is the third of three states. The distinction between title and subject keeps the biblical reference accurate, and the image remains a dramatic example of landscape carrying the weight of a historical scene.
