Description
The Farm-Yard with the Cock shows pigs feeding at a trough and poultry pecking near a heap, while laborers converse beyond wooden palings. J. M. W. Turner gives The Farm-Yard with the Cock a densely inhabited rural setting rather than a distant pastoral panorama. The animals’ practical routines and the people’s pause share attention, allowing the yard to gain character through the small activities taking place within its boundaries.
Issued in 1809 for Liber Studiorum, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with Charles Turner engraving and publishing it. Tonal work gives the clustered scene a substantial setting, while the differing figures and animals keep observation moving across the yard. The print makes familiar farm life absorbing through relationships of enclosure, work and rest rather than a single dramatic event.
