Description

Coast of Yorkshire, Near Whitby shows rough sea pounding a dark rocky shore, stranded passengers appealing for help while men enter a sheltered foreground cove. A lighthouse marks the skyline. J. M. W. Turner gives the marine scene a human urgency, connecting the force of the water with people close to the shore rather than presenting the storm as an empty spectacle.

Issued in 1811 for Liber Studiorum, the print was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner, with William Say adding mezzotint. The combination gives the rocks, waves and figures different tonal weights, making shelter and danger share the same stretch of coastline. The distant lighthouse provides a small upright accent, while the nearer water and people keep attention on the immediate difficulty of the encounter.
