Description

A church and trees give Saint Catharine’s Hill a distinct built and wooded presence in this print designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by J. C. Easling. Small figures occupy the view beneath the rising ground. Their modest scale encourages the eye to travel outward, connecting nearby human activity to the broader landscape above and beyond it.

Published in June 1811, the etching and mezzotint belongs to Liber Studiorum. Turner’s design joins Easling’s tonal engraving, giving the scene a material presence distinct from a watercolor or oil painting. Its interest lies in encountering a familiar type of landscape through a particular place rather than a general scenic formula. A hill becomes a point of attention within a wider view, allowing the printed image to preserve the relation between nearby forms and the space beyond them.
