Description

Rugged crags enclose a mountain prospect in Turner’s Ben Arthur, with a brighter opening amid the central clouds and a darker sky toward the right. The opposing slopes and changing illumination make the Scottish terrain feel substantial, giving the valley a space between great natural forms. The landscape’s drama comes from those relationships rather than from an added historical event.

Published on January 1, 1819, the etching and mezzotint was designed and etched by J. M. W. Turner and engraved by Thomas Goff Lupton. This impression is the third of three states. The work translates a large natural subject into a limited graphic field, allowing the relation between distance, terrain and scale to become a matter of close looking.
