Description

Francisco Goya’s Merry Folly gathers six figures in a circular dance. Their clothing recalls festive dress, but the bodies move heavily and the faces show little shared delight. The participants turn together without seeming fully connected, making the familiar rhythm of a social dance strangely mechanical. An almost empty landscape surrounds the group, isolating its movement from any recognizable celebration.

Created around 1815–1819 and published in 1864 as part of the Disparates, the print revisits a subject Goya had once treated with greater optimism in his tapestry designs. Here the title’s promise of merriment feels uncertain. Etching gives the figures distinct gestures, while aquatint draws them into a subdued atmosphere. The scene turns communal pleasure into an enigmatic performance, where being together does not necessarily mean sharing a feeling.
