Description

Ecce Homo by Albrecht Dürer presents Christ before a gathering of people beneath the arch of a building. The principal figure appears above the foreground crowd, while a companion extends an arm in a gesture of presentation. Turning heads and lifted hands create a lively response below, linking the elevated figure to the spectators.

Created around 1509 for The Small Passion, the woodcut balances a clear architectural frame with the varied movements of the gathering. Strong contours make the central figures readable, while the dark interior gives their appearance added force. The scene’s intensity comes from this contrast between exposure and response: one figure is offered to public view as the people around him give the moment its unsettled character.
