Description
Artist Drawing a Portrait of a Man shows an artist before a seated model, using a framed apparatus to record his appearance. The model waits beside a curtained bed, while the artist reaches toward the device at the center of the room. Tables, vessels and folds of fabric give the working space a recognizable domestic character rather than an idealized studio setting.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut makes the process of representation part of its subject. The apparatus separates the two figures while connecting the artist’s attention with the model’s pose, turning measurement into a visible activity. The scene’s interest lies in the meeting of technical method and ordinary human presence, showing artistic work as a patient exchange between looking, arranging and drawing.
