Description
Christ in Limbo shows Christ bending toward figures emerging from a dark opening, reaching out to lead them into the light. A banner rises above his shoulder, while fantastic creatures and broken architecture crowd the space behind. The rescued figures stand close together, making the scene’s vast spiritual subject visible through the direct exchange of hands and bodies.
This woodcut by Johannes Mommaert after Albrecht Dürer’s Little Passion design preserves the episode’s forceful contrast between captivity and release. The irregular doorway and threatening creatures intensify the darkness, while the joining hands provide a clear human center. The composition makes liberation an intimate action within a fantastic setting, allowing compassion and triumph to share the same compact space.
