Description
A standing figure wearing a fool’s cap gestures beside a crowned pig, while a sailing vessel appears on the water behind them. Latin text and a decorative floral border surround the illustration. The combination of absurd imagery and carefully arranged typography gives the page its distinctive satirical character.
Published in Basel by Bergmann von Olpe in 1497, the woodcut belongs to the illustrated world of Brant’s satirical book. The standing figure and accompanying forms have a direct graphic clarity, while the page’s ordered text provides a more regular rhythm around them. Without needing to resolve every detail of the satire, the sheet invites appreciation of how words and images could work together to animate a reader’s encounter.
