Description
The Assumption and Coronation of the Virgin by Albrecht Dürer joins two realms within one expansive scene. Below, the apostles gather around an open tomb, their varied gestures expressing astonishment and devotion. Above them, the Virgin kneels amid clouds beneath the figures who crown her, surrounded by the radiance and close company of heaven.
Created in 1510 for The Life of the Virgin, this woodcut carries the eye upward from the solid geometry of the tomb to the more fluid gathering in the clouds. Drapery, faces and branching rays give the crowded composition a richly patterned surface. Its emotional effect comes from the connection between earthly witnesses and the elevated vision, making the heavenly event feel both majestic and shared.
