Description
The Patron Saints of Austria, associated with Albrecht Dürer and Hans Springinklee, presents a solemn company in a broad horizontal arrangement. The standing saints carry distinctive attributes and wear varied robes and headgear, while their halos link the figures into a unified gathering. Their closely spaced bodies give the composition the dignity of a ceremonial assembly.
Dated 1515–17, this woodcut draws interest from the balance between shared order and individual identity. Repeating upright forms establish a steady rhythm, yet differences of pose, clothing and object prevent the group from becoming uniform. The panoramic format invites the viewer to move from figure to figure, appreciating the print as both a collective devotional image and a sequence of carefully differentiated presences.
