Description
The Annunciation brings the angel into Mary’s expansive room, where arches and stonework frame their encounter. Mary kneels beside a reading desk near a curtained bed, while a dove appears above her. A glimpse beyond the interior opens the scene toward a garden, giving the enclosed domestic space a connection to the world outside.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut gives architecture an active role in the sacred narrative. The angel’s movement crosses the carefully organized room, while Mary’s position among books and household furnishings makes the moment feel immediate and inhabited. Strongly described pillars, openings and fabric create depth through black lines alone. The image joins a sense of awe to the recognizable quiet of a place set aside for reading and reflection.
