Description
Christ on the Mount of Olives by Albrecht Dürer unfolds within a rugged landscape of trees and rock. Christ kneels with his hands raised, turning toward the angel who appears above him with a chalice. The disciples sleep in the foreground, while a group of figures approaches through the opening at the right.
Made around 1497–99 for The Large Passion, this woodcut brings solitude, prayer and approaching danger into the same scene. Dürer separates the central figure from the sleeping companions through posture and direction, while dense foliage and broken rock intensify the setting. The contrasting gestures give the episode its emotional clarity: one figure remains awake to the coming ordeal as the world around him rests.
