Description
Marcelle Lender and Eva Lavalliére appear in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s lively study of performers at the Variétés. Light, economical lines describe the figures and their elaborate clothing, leaving generous areas of open paper around their gestures.
The restrained marks give the scene a sense of movement caught in passing. Rather than filling every surface, Toulouse-Lautrec lets a few emphatic contours suggest the costumes, posture and character of the performance.
