Description
The Fog Warning by Winslow Homer places a lone fisherman between a hard-earned catch and an uncertain journey home. In this 1885 painting, he pauses at the oars of a small boat and looks toward a distant sailing vessel. Large fish lie at his feet, but the approaching bank of fog makes the open water feel suddenly vast.
The diagonal boat and rolling waves give the scene a strong forward movement, held in tension by the fisherman’s backward glance. Earthy browns, gray skies and deep greens keep attention on the human figure and the changing sea. Homer turns an ordinary moment of work into an absorbing study of judgment, effort and vulnerability.
