Description
Victor Mays’s Collier Brig and Barge presents a quiet maritime scene in warm golden light. A dark-hulled sailing vessel anchors the left side of the composition, while a boatman works near the shore in the foreground. A distant sailing ship and a small plume of smoke recede into the hazy horizon, balancing the detailed rigging with broad passages of sky and reflective water.
The subject evokes the working vessels that carried coal along the English coast and into the Thames approaches. Mays gives this industrial maritime activity an unhurried atmosphere through subdued olive, ochre and gray tones. The print carries a hand signature and the edition number 254/550 at the lower right, alongside the reproduced Mays ’86 date within the image. A cream mat with narrow contrasting borders and a dark, finely detailed frame finish the piece.
Overall framed dimensions are approximately 11 inches high by 15¾ inches wide. Light wear is visible on the frame, and the backing paper has a tear at the lower-left corner. A hanging wire and framing label remain on the reverse. Please review the signature detail and back photographs.
