Description
The Rejection of Joachim’s Offering by Albrecht Dürer unfolds within a temple whose arches draw the eye deep into the scene. Joachim stands among a crowded gathering before the officiating figure, while a curtained enclosure and altar provide a strong architectural focus. Turning heads and expressive hands make the exchange feel immediate despite the grandeur of the setting.
Made around 1504 for The Life of the Virgin, the woodcut gives a moment of refusal the weight of public ceremony. The receding architecture orders the crowd, while the varied poses allow tension to remain visible within that order. Dürer’s attention to stone, fabric and faces makes the temple a convincing place, sharpening the emotional isolation of the figure at the center of the episode.
