Description
The Betrothal of the Virgin gathers Mary and Joseph before a priest beneath an elaborately decorated arch. Their joined hands occupy the center, while attendants press close on either side. The carved doorway rises above the group in successive layers, turning the marriage ceremony into a scene of both human intimacy and architectural grandeur.
In this woodcut from The Life of the Virgin, Albrecht Dürer balances the crowded assembly with the clarity of the central gesture. Faces, hats and robes create a lively variety across the foreground, but the meeting of hands gives the story its quiet focus. The deep doorway extends the space behind the figures, making the ceremony feel rooted in a substantial, inhabited world.
