Description
Three robed men stand beneath curling banners in this portion of The Tapestry at Michelfeld. The central figure raises a small object in one hand, while the men to either side occupy their own clearly separated spaces. Their long garments and distinctive headwear give the group a measured rhythm across the open ground.
Albrecht Dürer’s woodcut relies on the relationship between figures and words rather than a richly furnished setting. The banners sweep across the otherwise uncluttered sky, answering the upright forms below with generous curves. The result is a restrained but intriguing image in which small differences of gesture and costume carry the expressive weight, inviting attention to each participant within the larger allegorical gathering.
