Description
A web of interlaced lines fills a circular field, forming seven six-pointed stars within a pattern that appears to continue without interruption. Four decorative corner pieces extend the design into the surrounding space. Embroidery Pattern with Seven Six-pointed Stars and Four Corner Pieces rewards slow looking, as each apparent boundary becomes another passage into its intricate network.
This woodcut by Albrecht Dürer follows a design associated with Leonardo da Vinci, preserving that artistic relationship within a striking ornamental image. Pale lines stand against the dark field, allowing the interwoven structure to emerge with remarkable clarity. The pleasure of the composition comes from its balance of repetition and complexity: the overall circle is immediately grasped, while the paths within it continually lead the eye somewhere new.
