Description
Christ on the Cross with the Virgin and Saint John shows the two witnesses with their hands raised in prayer and grief. A skull rests at the foot of the upright beam, while a quiet landscape stretches toward distant buildings behind the figures. Broad open areas around the cross give the compact composition a clear and solemn character.
This woodcut, formerly attributed to Albrecht Dürer, presents the Crucifixion through a small number of firmly outlined forms. The Virgin’s lowered head and John’s upward gaze offer different responses to the central figure, while their long robes create a stable base beneath the outstretched arms. The scene’s emotional force comes from this measured arrangement, allowing posture, gesture and the space between the figures to convey mourning without a crowded narrative setting.
