Description
Saints Nicholas, Ulrich and Erasmus by Albrecht Dürer gathers three richly dressed figures beneath an architectural frame. Their mitres, ceremonial garments and identifying objects give each saint a distinct appearance, while the closely aligned bodies form a unified devotional group. The variety of textures makes the robes and attributes as engaging as the faces themselves.
In this woodcut, strong contours keep the three figures clear despite the abundance of detail. Repeated vertical forms create a steady rhythm, while small differences in posture lend the gathering an individual character. Dürer combines dignity with careful observation, allowing the image to function as both a recognizable sacred assembly and a compelling study of elaborate dress, object and human presence.
